Types of journeys: Bjelašnica, Nature

Bjelašnica is the name of a mountain situated in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located on the southwest, and it is only a 20 minute drive from Sarajevo.

Bordering Mount Igman, its highest peak is 2,067 meters (6,782 feet). Name comes from the word "Bijel," which means "White”. It is home for a variety of traditional Bosnian villages, Bogomil tombstones, mountain huts, watermills, canyons, and waterfalls. Bjelašnica is a popular tourist spot for hikers, snow-surfers, and skiers. During the 1984 Winter Olympics, it was used for a number of events. Today, several hotels and skiing areas still exist from that time. The beauty of this mountain is augmented by its temperate climate. This is the result of its location within the Dinaric Alps, its altitude, as well as its topography. Situated at the highest part of the 300 kilometer (186 mile) long Dinaric Alps, the mountain borders two climatic zones: a Mediterranean and a Continental zone. Here, air masses often converge on this mountain resulting in abundant rain and snow which often lasts well into spring. it is quite possible for climbers and skiers to experience three seasons in one day. Bjelašnica Mountain is particularly beautiful, not just for its scenery but also for its picturesque villages, such as Lukomir which has one of the most exiting paragliding terrains in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Here, traditional Bosnian cooking, a relaxing atmosphere and many interesting events, combined with the proverbial hospitality of its people, will make for an unforgettable experience.
